I'd boot off a live CD, just 'cause it's easy and foolproof.
Mount the drive, edit the file(s).

Must be the days karma, 'cause yesterday I fresh installed my home system
on Ubuntu 10.04 and completely COMPLETELY fubared it trying to get
XBMC installed (amd64) and had to re-install again. Inside of 4 hours.
I installed Moovida instead the next time for now. Still looking for a
better home media center experience that my wife will like and use....

Ubuntu is NOT a serious Linux install, it is an amazing Linux install.
There are times I just want things to work. But building a system from
scratch and compiling a kernel, fixing the 255+ things that go wrong along
the way is a very educational process. It's something I need to do again
just to see if I still can.
