Jim -

Thanks; the problem may be some stale files or locks, but not a redundantly running copy of Firefox. I finally reverted to my older installation, but it took blowing away my ~/.mozilla directory, a reboot, and a couple of network restarts before I got an older version (3.0.15) running. I'm not anxious to go there again but eventually I'll have to face it. Meanwhile I'm working again.

are you 100% sure that an old firefox isn't also still running (maybe
headless/half-crashed)? I had a similar situation and the old firefox
had a lock on the original prefs and the merge/update was stuck until
the old pid was found and killed.
