I have a very similar problem with a gentoo install once.  It turned out
I had a typo in /etc/fstab.

Not sure why the other rescure disks won't work, but you should be able
to boot knoppix into english mode by type "knoppix lang=en" at the boot
prompt.  You should also be able to press F2 and F3 at the boot prompt
for help.
