[ale] usbdevfs confusion

On older kernels, though I haven't tested this on 2.6.x, my Palm device
would occasionally only work from /dev/ttyUSB1 and not /dev/ttyUSB0,
although dmesg said it was assigned to both. 

Might be relevant...
