You don't need to recompile.  The 2.6 kernel has support for this 
chipset.  Make sure the card is installed and execute 'lspci'

Post that results.

Do the following as root:

modprobe firmware_class

What does that return?

What does 'cat /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug' return?
