[ale] howto improve ps2pdf output

I'd like to explore this a bit since quality of PDFs is important and 
very relative to how their made.  Has anyone read up on this and know 
what the scripts or programs need as parameters to improve the quality 
of large and small documents?  Like can you specify somewhere the 
minimum dpi of the pdf?  How about rendering pictures from postscript at 
particular dpi but still display as a certain size?
