[ale] Bad Superblock on /hdd?

In the /etc/fstab at the end of the line to mount /dev/hdd as whatever
filesystem it is mounted as, there is an option of putting the frequency
at reboot of fsck'ing the filesystem. I would read man '/etc/fstab' for
the format. Also, if you don't use a journaled filesystem then jerking
the cord out of the wall is asking for trouble. Reiserfs, XFS, and
ext3fs should recover from lack of "sync'ing", however, ext2fs
wouldn't. Since you say your format is e2, I imagine that is ext2fs and
you have real problems. The failure of unmounting the drive could
simply be that something running as root is not being killed properly
until after the sync done during shutdown is over. It may be trying to
write to a logfile after the sync is done and before init kills all
running processes. This is all just guessing on my part. Why don't you
post your /etc/fstab and your /var/log/messages showing the shutdown and
reboot?
