Mike,

I like your radar detector analogy. I agree that 99% of anti-virus defense 
can be handled by simply modifying ones behavior however, there are 
circumstances where you would want to have a scanner.

1. If users are storing email and/or email attachments on the server
    and the client workstations are Windows based.

2. Users can store un-screened files on the server, especially Windows files.

If I'm the only user of a Linux workstation that isn't being used as a file 
server then I agree that "common sense", as you so eloquently put it, can 
easily handle the problem.

In my case I generally don't run anti-virus on Linux systems, then again 
any Linux systems I set up have a real sys admin as opposed to a user 
maintaining them.
