[ale] Bad drive?

I got something like this installing Red Hat 6.2 and Mandrake 7.2.  It was a
bad CDROM drive.  Replacing the CDROM drive got rid of the error and I was
able to install ...pj

Am I looking at a bad drive?  Or is this more of a kernel problem?  I'm
