In a large scale production environment, package managers should be used. It
just makes things easier to track. In a smaller environment (fewer than 10
machines) I like to compile from source. You are correct about apps running
better when compiled from source. There is a solid technical reason for this.
It's compiled on your machine and therefore optimized for your system...assuming
the Makefile is properly written. Most of the time this wont make that much of a
difference. But, if you're running oddball hardware...it definately will.
