That is not true. GPL is free for use. One is free to sell GPL code for a
profit. What is not allowed is hoarding or removing code from the public
domain. 

The difficulty people have with GPL is simply their own greed and inability
to share. This civilization when it passes will bear the epitaph: "Get back
Jack! Keep your hands off of my stack!"
