[ale] unable to log in!

I woke up this morning to a really bad problem. I booted up and got the 
login prompt. Fine. I entered a username and hit return. I got the login 
prompt again. I kept trying to log in and finally got this message:

login: PAM failure, aborting: Success
INIT: ID "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Five minutes passed and I was in the same situation all over again. Has 
anybody ever seen this before? I can log in with Tom's RootBoot Disk. 
But I don't know what I should be looking for. An fsck doesn't do 
anything to improve the situation.
