[ale] printing daemon????

lpd is the only daemon required unless it's setup to use identd.  What happens
when you lpr a file?  Do you get an error or does it get queued but never sent
to the device?
Another thing to look at is the /etc/printcap file and make sure that you have
an entry like this for every printer.
