}	You are definitely short on swap space! My rule of thumb is to
}allocate at least twice the swap space as real memory and make sure memory
}is reasonable. How much REAL memory do you have. Add that plus your swap
}space and that's your virtual memory. I don't think I'm configuring anything
}with less than 64Meg of swap anymore... Kernel compiles do eat memory too...

You know this swap thing, I'm not too sure. I posted a question a while back
as to whether this 2X rule of thumb should apply when you have a large
amount of real memory. Well, besides getting flamed for asking a stupid
question, the impression I got was that it applies to a point. Well, I still
don't know the answer, but I do know that when I had 16 meg of real memory
and a 32 meg swap, X was doing a lot of swapping. I've since upgraded to
40 meg of real and left my swap at 32. I see very little swapping now
with X and kernel compiles run fine. So, with the possibility of the
flame jerk rearing his ass, I would pose the question again, but I won't.
Point is, I don't have a problem with 40 meg real and 32 swap. Free looks
okay too, example with X running, three xterms, xeyes, xdaliclock, xbiff,
xload and netscape:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 38976 28268 10708 17884 2568 14772
-/+ buffers: 10928 28048
Swap: 33260 0 33260

Still have plenty of real memory available, and after a few samples during a
kernel compile here's the worst:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 38976 38500 476 21520 980 21812
-/+ buffers: 15708 23268
Swap: 33260 72 33188

Still, very little swap used and some real memory hanging around. So, if
anyone has a better rule than the 2X rule, I'd like to hear it.
