^You probably have to edit your /etc/resolv.conf file. Be sure to
^put the nameserver entry into it. Mine here at work looks like:
^
^domain cray.com
^search cray.com
^nameserver 128.162.46.1

I have seen this set-up before

The search and domain staements are mutually exclusive and may not
  appear more than once.

Looking at the descitopn, search is a a form of domain that can take
more htan one domian name, thus searching the domain for names.

So if your system had "search cray.com cray.net" and you sent
it a name of Cheese-Wiz it would search for Cheese-Wiz,
Cheese-Wiz.cray.com, and Cheese-Wiz.cray.net.

Am I wrong? Does the domain and search statements cause a double
lookup there, thus delaying a bad name quite a while?
