My typical VMH setup includes libvirt and manually-configured bridge
for the virtual machines, for the same reason.  It's easier to create
them manually and simply register them with libvirt. Then, just attach
the correct VM to the correct bridge to get the intended result.
The "host only with VM network" setup is just "subnetwork without a
published inbound route", and I tend to prefer routing to the use of
bridges to tie VM segment into physical segment.
