[ale] gui design is crap

The VMware gui is web now, too.  Post 5.5.x, the Windows-only gui only works if at hardware level 8 or below for your VM.  I imagine that all support for it will be gone in the next release.

It's web. Beats the VMWare gui (runs only on winders) but is too subtle for
my tastes.
