I'm talking about Windows 7 and Vista - where there is still a number that can be entered.  The copy of Windows that comes pre-shipped (at least it is the case for HP, Dell, and Toshiba) is not activated with that key.  You can use regular OEM media, and activate once with that key.  Even on a different brand of hardware.  For example, you can take a Windows 7 key that is glued to an HP laptop and activate on a Dell desktop.  Now, having said that, it is a violation of the EULA to do it, I'm just pointing out that it is technically possible.

Yes, but doesn't that require copying the certificate from the host firmware and grafting it into the VM BIOS image?
