[ale] Linux Mint 17 Not Recognizing Printer Device

I had the same issue with a Ubuntu box sometime ago.  The problem was a
broken hplip package (did you have an update done recently? ). The solution
was to download the package from the HP site and install it. Others
reported that rolling back to an older version would also work. I did not
try that.
