I think it depends where you live.  There are a few websites that will
help you, like antennaweb.com and tvfool.com.  For me, I bought an RCA
ANT751 which I point generally towards downtown and I get pretty much
every OTA station except ION-TV (14.x), which broadcasts out of Rome.  I
have this mounted in my attic without any pre-amp (although I do have a
distribution amp).  Works great for me.
