I've had no problems setting up ATT Uverse RG's (Residential Gateways)
or older aDSL modems (Mostly the WesTel's). Pretty much, they all have
web gateways that are 100% FireFox compatible.

I've had ATT guys out here for serviced calls (mostly after lightening
strikes have taken out an RG or two) and they've shown no hesitation
over Linux when I'm testing the connections out and we're discussion the
connections and configurations.

DOCSIS cable modems are pretty much "fire and forget", though I haven't
played with any (other than my son's) in years.

Last time I had any problems with a DSL modem was actually when I was
setting up a commercial ATT DSL modem for Callanwolde ages and ages ago
that had a static /26 configured. That required a bit of a back and
forth with AT&T on the phone but we still worked it out without
resorting to a Windows machine (which I had plenty available there at
the time if I had needed one).

You can buy your own modems for DSL, or cable (DOCSIS), or even UVerse
(complicated provisioning but still doesn't require Winblows). It's not
all that complicated with any of them anymore.

I guess the ATT people might have given you puzzled looks because the
question simply doesn't come up much any more and the modern equipment
with web interfaces is really OS agnostic now. I wouldn't have even
bothered to ask.
