Yeah, it is horribly inefficient/resource intensive.  I've had to up my SUSE Manager VM (running the version based on 1.7.x) to 32GB of memory and 12 vCPUs to get usable performance, and it is managing less than 500 servers.

when spacewalk works, it's pretty cool. But the pain curve to get there....

It uses a different repo format than a typical rpm repo. So slurping in a
freshly mirror repo take stupid time. At one point each new package was
searched for in the spacewalk database to avoid duplication. So each search
got longer with each new package. I guess the devs forgot that the repo is
already indexed using the repo file. <sigh>
