They increase throughput. Not linearly, but some.

If you want to see something awesome, check out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundabout#Turbo_roundabouts which involve
deciding which exit you want ahead of time and committing to a lane, which
increases throughput significantly more.
