Perhaps you are right.  I don't have Linux experience that far back.  However, I'm still not convinced that the level of sophistication of the desktop, ease of use, lack of bugs, and ease of installation, of the desktops / systems that far back in history, would be appropriate for most non technical Linux newbies.
