[ale] diff being boneheaded

ugh. 24 million line files and sdiff. The little ones are 6M and 12M.

cat -vt | grep for known issues of similarity returned no funky characters.

I'm replacing a windows system with centos. I'm beginning to actually
believe it's all just winders in it's death throes barfing up crap.
