Add in perms, dyes, and straighteners and you have a point. These cases were about literally braiding someone's hair, not any of that stuff. Read this for more background.

Messing with hair is a public health issue. Add in perms, dyes and straighteners and now there's an immediate chemical handling safety issue. So yeah, cosmetology training is a good thing.

Yeah, in Texas for example, to get an individual license to wash someones hair you need to complete " 150 hours of instruction completed in not less than four weeks from date of enrollment" and for hair braiding it's 35 hours of training. Plus, of course, pay whatever fees and go through however different offices. I don't know if Texas is the worst or anything--I think they generally have a good reputation relating to red tape. They just came up near the top in my Google search.

It was floating around in the back of my head--I think I might have seen something about this case last year:

Utah required 2000 hours of training to braid someones hair!?! Court said nope, sorry Utah.

The USDA, FDA, or some other state or federal government agency may disagree with your statement about not needing a license to sell chickens. After all, in a lot of places you need a license just to profit from washing or braiding someones hair!

You mean, aside from the normal, routine business licenses and so forth?
