A while back I was looking for a remote backup solution that was sort of
bullet proof. So I'm going to connect my Rpi to a USB hard drive,
connect the power supply to a mechanical timer that will turn it off for
15 minutes each day. That way if something hangs or fails to boot due
to bouncing mains, it'll get reset. I'll configure the Rpi to listen
to a non standard ssh port and configure the router to pass that port to
the Rpi. I'll be able to determine when the 15 minute period is
scheduled by looking at the uptime and avoid running any backups around
that time.

It should be a fun project. There's no reason you couldn't do the same
thing with a friend's Internet connection. Have two identical systems
and backup to each other's device. Make sure you do backups during
sleep time of course.

I really like having a remote system that I can ssh into and run
rdiff-backup to it.

Jim.
