[ale] So what do we do when the PC goes away?

Ron,
I have not used LXDE, but I know that with XFCE, you can create multiple
"panels" like in Gnome 2.x, and there are a number of panel applets for
things such as CPU load, etcŠ
The out-of-the-box stock experience from XFCE actually looks a lot like
the old CDE interface, but most distros I have seen put a panel across the
bottom and give a menu at the bottom left - sort of like Windows 95/2000.
