You did say rent, right? I used to rent a 3br duplex just inside the perimeter for only $365/mo (my share, with 2 other people) in the neighborhood behind Ashford Dunwoody & Johnson's Ferry. It was drive/bike close to 3 Marta stations, and it had back & front yards. It was great but not fancy, and allowed me to sock money away for a down payment on my current house. You might find a better deal than a separate house if you check out duplexes. Of course you still pay property taxes indirectly when you rent, but it's built into the price so if you can afford the rent you don't have to worry about them. This super quick search turned up a 2 br 2 miles from Doraville Marta for $695. And it says it has a fence (for the dog).
