[ale] ubuntu 12.04 SLOW!

I appreciate the comments thus far and am interested in more. However, I'm in a hurry to get this machine running. I deleted Ubuntu 12.04 and went back to 11.04 with Gnome 2 that I know and (usually) love. It's lightning fast by comparison.

I have Ubuntu on my laptop.

The first thing I did was installed GNOME 3 from the PPA, and ditched
the use of Unity. I was much happier with responsiveness from my system
then.
