[ale] no toolbars in mint 12

I installed 'mate' - not realizing it was another desktop, so I didn't log into
it.
At this point I still didn't have toolbars in gnome 3.
I installed KDE and logged in- toolbars work.
I logged into mate- realizing at this time that it was a destop. It had a
toolbar.
I logged into gnome 3- now it has toolbars. 
 
So maybe this isn't a driver issue but the exact cause is murky.
 
In any case it works now.
