[ale] Prelancing oportunities?

Prelancing is described by some as 'pre-compensation freelancing'. AKA
working for free.
Or as the great philosopher Ashton Kutcher said :
"Volunteering, when we really break it down is working for free. I'm
thinking I have to go tell people to get excited and go work and not get
any money..."

I have several reasons for wanting to Prelance.
I am attempting to re-entered the work force after a prolonged
absence.
I'd like to build some current reference, since my old ones
have grown stale or vanished.
It's what your _/doing /_that counts. Many positions
understandably filter the past by focusing on the current need.
My 25 years of experience with hardware/firmware/software can
be better demonstrated than described.
Having been on the hiring side of the desk, I came to believe
'try before you buy" is the closest you get to a sure thing.

A very short history. My career has always been close to the hardware
and mostly at start-up companies where I wore many hats.. I have
designed/debugged/integrated fault tolerant board level products, point
to point real time networks, telecom test equipment, DC motor
controllers,. As a member of start-up teams I used a varied
os/script/language to write device drivers, product test apps, and
hardware simulation code.

I would prefer to work on projects which would result in a professional
reference, but I am open to pro bono activities.
