[ale] Edubuntu Local Apps and Hard Drives : was Need Help sending PCs to Haiti

I think I am confused but starting to see the light. Local apps run in the client's memory only? No hard drives needed?
When people say they run local apps off the clients, they mean from memory and not hard drives?
