[ale] Linux alternative recommendation ?

I prefer not to travel any more, just because of all this. I used to
love it, if I had the money. You might want to encrypt your hard drive,
in case the PC is stolen. How to do that is a whole other can of
worms. (Encryption may make it harder to recover in case of a
disaster.) You could look up TrueCrypt. If you didn't want the
authorities to see your data during a forced inspection, you can encrypt
the hard drive with one password to protect you from thieves. If they
ask you to boot the machine, you boot with that password. Then, you can
encrypt your data with a second password. If done properly, they don't
even know it's there. That one, you keep secret. Even if they knew
it's there, they couldn't decrypt it without your permission, if you use
a really good password. They could probably arrest you if you refuse
though. Check https://www.eff.org/ and / or with your lawyer to know
your rights and the TSA's rights. I haven't done the research to know
how to do this yet. But I would seriously consider it if I traveled much.

(PS - If you email me and don't get a quick response, you might want to
call on the phone. I get about 300 emails per day from alternate energy
mailing lists and such. I don't always see new messages very quickly.)
