[ale] screwing up the UI

I Think that there is a tendency in many recent posts to compare linux  
and Ubuntu in particular, to other operating systems.  Ubuntu is not 
windows and is not mac, it is Ubuntu. There are quirks and sharp edges 
amongst them all.   All user interfaces have similarities and 
differences and they all tend to change from time to time.  If you 
inclined to appreciate the user experience you get with one of these UIs 
over the others, then use that one.
