[ale] error during installation "checking hlt instructions"

I had similar problems when I upgraded my PC last week: a hang during
the installation.
I solved it by successively removing pci cards, until the problem went
away. In my case it was a scsi card that was causing the problem.
Checking the BIOS is not a bad idea either. One can get free BIOS
upgrades usually.
