[ale] my cousin's linux computer and desktop not appearing

Sounds like gnome-panel went away.

Unless it was removed from the system, a log out, log in should bring it
back.

Hmm. ctl-alt-F3 then ctl-alt-del to reboot may be a better route. not sure
how ubuntu hooks up some stuff.
