[ale] Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't like my laptop but 9.10 worked just fine on it?

I finally got my Dell X300 up to 10.04.  I used the same fix as Van.  The
most trouble I had was trying to interrupt grub so I could edit the config.
I had to hold down the shift key during a certain part of the boot.  It was
not one of the first twenty things I tried.
