[ale] [ALE-jobs] Fwd: Urgent Job Opening for Linux Administrator in Alpharetta, GA

I did some contracting back after the 2002 tech bust. One benefit I
saw to it is that it does seem to put you in new environments so you
aren't doing the same thing forever. For me that made it really fresh
all the time.

The downside I saw was that one of the contracts did have awful health
insurance (it didn't even qualify as an insurance plan under federal
guidelines at the time). In fact it was that lack at my last contract
(before I did contract to perm here) that led me to leave a job I really
liked in NC. They even offered to convert me after I resigned but as I
told the manager at the time my view of that job from day one was
"temporary" as it wasn't presented as temp to perm.

However not all contract firms are created equal. While 1 offered the
joke insurance I mentioned above another had a full medical plan (using
the same insurer I'd had at my prior permanent gig). I did talk to a
recruiter from the other agency here in Atlanta last year and he said
their plan is actually now a real medical one.

I decided back then that if I were a younger person I might actually try
the contracting thing even with relocating periodically. At my age
however, I wouldn't leave a permanent job for contracting and might not
do it at all.

A side benefit to contracting - It can limit your hours as many
contracts require the employer to pay the agency by the hour for your
time yet the agency pays you a set salary. It keeps the employer from
abusing you with hours because they have to pay for them and it keeps
you from abusing the employer by trying to pad your hours as there is no
direct benefit to you to do so.

You hit the nail on the head, at least for my POV. I get an e-mail once
every week or two from people looking to hire a contractor. The funny
ones
are the ones that tell me about contracts in Salt Lake City, North
Dakota or
some other place I don't want to relocate.

I politely reply to the recruiter saying thanks for the reminder, but
that
I'm happily employeed at the moment and not interested in contracting
opportunities. Also, if they want to offer me positions someplace other
than Atlanta, they should at least make them places that I'd like to
move to
(SFO, Orange County, Paris, London, etc). Then again, I imagine the
jobs
are much easier to fill in the places with nice weather and good night
life
;-)

:=I'm glad you posted this... It brings up an interesting question...
:=
:=Is anyone out there contracting?
:=
:=More importantly, when these recruiters contact you for contract
positions,
:=would you ever consider leaving a full-time position (especially in an
:=economy like this) to take one?
:=
:=Or, do you (as I) more feel that contract gigs are sort of a holdover
until
:=you can find a perm gig?
:=
:=I'd certainly take one if I was unemployed, but wouldn't generally
consider
:=one to leave a FT/Perm position.
:=
:=Discussion?  Thoughts?
