[ale] Xterm gets weird, caches chars until space or arrow

Just figured it out.

On my desktop system I had played with SCIM

"Smart Common Input Method"

and a sticky shift key thought I was hitting "Shift-Space"
and enabling that mode..  Aaaargh!
