[ale] Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't like my laptop but 9.10 worked just fine on it?

Nothing is ever completely painless. At least not with software. There are
regressions in software all the time. Especially Intel's graphics drivers.
Ask Erica... she has a laptop with an intel chipset that only works with
every other release of the Intel graphics driver because they keep
regressing on the same issue. It isn't an Ubuntu-specific problem, it is an
upstream problem.

I advise people to stay the fsck away from Intel graphocs chipsets for that
reason. When they work, they're alright. When they work. However, the norm
seems to be that they don't. And for that matter, its not a Linux or X.org
specific thing either; they fail fantastically on Windows as well using
Intel's drivers.

try booting into runlevel 3 and not 5 (no X) and then you can launch x
manually and kill it with ctl-alt-bkspc and watch the errors. Aso check
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

sounds like the video driver is bad or the wrong one is loaded. or the
graphical boot is not unloaded before the real x starts.

Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by
faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits.
