I'm not having this problem.  Look at the process described in 
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86+raid+lvm2-quickinstall.xml.  At 
work I run a file server with three 2-partition RAID1s, a 14-drive 
RAID1+0 volume (with the mirrors across separate SAS controllers), and 
an 8-drive RAID1+0 partition and they all come up flawlessly at boot.
