Heres the best page I always reference VirtualBox networking issues.

 It states interestingly enough that there are some ICMP limitations
(maybe resolved now?...hmmm.... pun).  I never like using NAT for
reasons such as this, and pretty much always go with Bridged
Networking option, especially if I need to communicate with the host
machine.
