You sure they aren't pressing the key combination that disables or
enables the wireless?

We see this a lot at Free IT Athens. Someone toogles the hardware kill
switch for their wireless radio and doesn't know why wireless topped
working.

I'd run memtest and an fsck before doing any other troubleshooting.
