[ale] login slowdown with large number of user accounts

Thanks to all, and Jim and Tony most recently, we're trying some of these suggestions. One test we did was to reload K12LTSP on a server, load the 1050 accounts, and it worked fine, bootup in seconds, so definitely seems to be an issue with K12Linux/Fedora10.
