[ale] custom kernel causes restart

Geoffrey,
No kernel panic or other message before the rebooting system message?  Is
your kernel booting quiet?  Lastly, you could try making your initrd without
the USB modules, and blacklisting them in modprobe.conf.  That would tell
you if they're really the culprits, or a red herring.
