Actually the man page for Xorg (not xorg.conf) says in part:

"The special  combinations  of  key presses recognized directly by Xorg
are:
       Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
          Immediately kills the server -- no questions asked.   This
can
          be disabled with the DontZap xorg.conf(5x) file option.

This is from my CentOS5 so would be true for RHEL5 as well.  

So I guess it depends on how "current" Xorg is based on comments below.

Thanks, the manpage says it (DontZap) is defaulted off, so I guess it 
(ctrl-alt-backspace) should work, I'll try it next time I need it 
(probably soon) ....
