and BTW, make certain you can actually see the drive from the BIOS still. Since it was Fedora 9, you might want try booting off of the live disk and see what it thought it should was bound to there.... are you sure that they haven't changed the naming convention or such? I would read the startup log carefully, looking for the HP drive ID or similar....
