[ale] keyboard problem

Hi,

The keyboard on my friend's Kubuntu 8.10 system has suddenly gone wacko. She
fired it up the other day and noticed that the keyboard was unresponsive after
logging onto the desktop. She can type but only after holding the keys down a
long time and then the typmatic thing kicks in too.

Here are my observations:

- Keyboard works fine at the grub menu, KDE login, character-mode console and
  under Windows.
- Keyboard becomes really unresponsive after the desktop initializes
- the keyboard is not dead but you have to hold the keys down long to get
  anything
- the numlock is responsive during desktop init but goes dead at the end
  (using KDE4)
- the mouse is responsive and apps launch with their usual start up times.

I'm 99.9% sure this is a software problem. Any ideas what the problem is or
where I can start looking?
