[ale] OT: Safari 4

Can anybody access gmail successfully with Safari 4 (Mac OS 10.5.8)?
It's trying some crazy redirection for about a minute, then gives up with:

Google
Error

Request-URI Too Large

The requested URL /accounts/ServiceLogin... is too large to process.


Any idea what to do about it?
